We're still seven weeks away from the big dog of the festival season, the Detroit International Jazz Festival, but Sunday marks the return of the largest showcase for the everyday heroes of Detroit's jazz scene -- the 16th annual Michigan Jazz Festival. Dedicated solely to local jazz, the festival features 20 bands and 150 musicians, from solo pianists to five big bands, performing continuously on six stages for more than nine hours. And it's free.
Among the diverse performers on the docket this year are the Hot Club of Detroit, saxophonist George Benson, the Paul Keller Trio's Toast to Nat King Cole, big bands led by Johnny Trudell and Ed Nuccilli, pianist Alma Smith's Quartet, pianist Gary Schunk's Trio, guitarist Perry Hughes' Trio and euphonium virtuoso Brad Felt's NuQuartet Plus One. There will also be solo piano sets from Matt Michaels, Charles Boles, Bob Seeley, Steve Richko, Alma Smith and Taslimah Bey.
